President and CEO | Nutriva Group
Bill Vanderkooi, the oldest of 6 kids, grew up on a local dairy farm in Abbotsford BC. From farm kid to entrepreneur, Bill is now the president & CEO of Nutriva Group. His Dad had hoped he’d take over the family dairy farm after high school graduation, but Bill had other plans. He went off to college and graduated from Michigan State University in 1993 with Master’s Degree in Animal Science, specializing in dairy cattle nutrition and physiology. He returned to the Fraser Valley and worked in the agricultural industry. In 2009, he founded Nutriva, a group of grassroots businesses with a focus on innovation in the dairy, egg and beef sectors. The business is structured around three pillars – Feed, Farm and Food representing each step in the value chain towards producing food that improves health and wellness.
In 2010, Bill established Bakerview EcoDairy as an agri-tourism destination in partnership with Science World. The EcoDairy was Bill’s way of giving back to the agricultural community in which he was born and raised, and it’s a place where people can learn about and appreciate farming, food, and agri-innovation. Since EcoDairy’s inception, Bill has added innovative technologies to his enterprise including a robotic milker, anaerobic digester, Calf-Rail feeding system and now a HydroGreen system which grows grass from seed for feed in just six days. There’s always a new innovation on the horizon. Bill is a board member for a private school and the Dairy Innovation Association, where he is serving through leadership, strategic planning and implementation of pioneering management tools. A husband and father (and avid CrossFitter), Bill and his wife Helinda have five children.
