Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster: Case Studies of Sectors Embracing Digital Transformation

2:15pm – Allan Noordvyk– Precision Health in the Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster:
Today, the digital health information we have is mostly kept in disconnected silos. Other health information is not available in digital format at all. This session will give examples of how the Precision Health team within the Digital Technology Supercluster intends to improve this situation, and with it, patient’s lives.

2:25pm – Laura Petrescue- The Learning Factory and its Digital Twin: Transforming Industry
In this globally competitive economy with increasing cost down pressure, the challenge for industry is how to compete. This case study focusses on a paradigm shift in how we look at advanced manufacturing through the concept of the Learning Factory and Digital Twin.

2:35pm – William Parkinson– Earth Data Store in the Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster:
Geographic information is the lifeblood for many of BC’s world-leading resource industries. The “Earth Data Store” is UrtheCast’s vision to be a key supply chain element that improves the productivity and competitiveness of major industries such as forestry, mining, and agriculture, and provides better environmental awareness. The Earth Data Store will transform the current 3-dimensional digital models of the world, built from static satellite images of unknown age, into a 4-dimensional globe where pixels are less than a day old, and where pixels from last week and last month are available.

Building an Adaptive Organization

It’s all changed. Our ‘Once Upon a Time’ stories when business operated within a world of fixed capital assets and brand has become cliché. No longer can we rely on the competitive strategy that fed off of these rules; where our strong foundation for growth led to wins coming in two to five year cycles and where business growth moved as fast as products could ship; and brands could rise. Join a panel of business leaders who are creating “adaptive” organizations, building innovation into their DNA, disrupting categories, and learn how you can watch for the signals of change and stay ahead of the crowd. It matters – in ANY size of organization.

Like any capability, creativity and invention are skills that can be practiced and optimized. Brent will survey the approaches his company uses to stay creative and systematize the invention process.

The Unlikely Solution to Ocean Plastic | David Katz, Plastic Bank

Preventing ocean plastic could be humanity’s richest opportunity. The Plastic Bank is a worldwide chain of stores where everything from school tuition to cooking fuel and more is available for purchase in exchange for plastic garbage that is sorted, shredded and sold to brands who reuse “social plastic” in their products. Hear how we can solve the problem of ocean plastic pollution and end extreme poverty at the same time!

Canada’s Global Leadership in the Low Carbon Economy

Canada has made significant commitments to global climate change and mitigation of fossil carbon emissions. In this context, Canada can be a global leader in creating a Low Carbon Economy. Strategic advantages include the world’s largest sustainable forest resource as a feedstock for bio-based products, capacity within traditional biomass-processing industries to transition to bioenergy and biomaterials production, and proximity to markets where sustainability has become a critical product metric. Unique synergies also exist across an array of low-carbon and zero-carbon technology platforms within our innovation ecosystem. This session brings together key players along the Low Carbon Economy value chain who are challenging our existing paradigms to ensure Canada takes its rightful place as a truly carbon-efficient society.
